Fire Explorer’s Program

Since 2001, Haddon Fire Company No. 1 has sponsored a Fire Explorer Program for youth from 16 to 19. The purpose of the program is to introduce young men and women to a career in firefighting. The Explorers are outfitted with full firefighting gear, trained by fire company officers, and respond to emergencies along with the volunteers. Even though they are not allowed to enter a burning building, they perform many useful and necessary tasks on the fireground, such as changing the firefighter’s air bottles, connection of the hydrant, setting ground ladders and bringing tools from the engines and other apparatus. They have also been helpful at other emergencies, such as motor vehicle accidents, alarm calls, storm damage, and many others. From the Explorers, Haddon Fire Company No. 1 has welcomed quite a few new volunteers from this program.

Explorer training takes place once a month. They’re invited and encouraged to also train with the volunteers twice a month. They have a regular membership meeting on the first Monday of each month at 7:30PM.

For information about the Program, contact the Station at 856/429-4308. Applications are also available at the Station, 15 North Haddon Avenue.

Adopt-A-Hydrant Programm

During the winter months fourth grade students are encouraged to participate in an Adopt-A-Hydrant program. When it snows those who have adopted a hydrant are asked to:

Dig out a 36-inch walk space from the curb line to the front discharge of the hydrant
Dig out a 20-inch walk space completely around the hydrant

This will help to guarantee that your neighborhood fire hydrants are ready for use and are not blocked or covered by snow.

The clearing of the hydrants will only be done during daylight hours and only hydrants on light traffic streets will be assigned.

Those who adopt a hydrant will have the satisfaction of protecting homes from fire damage by helping the fire department clearly and quickly locate the hydrants in time of an emergency.

At the beginning of spring, all the children who adopted hydrants and keep them free of snow will be invited to the firehouse to receive a special gift, and a public “Thank You” in local newspapers.
