WELCOMING MESSAGE

Message from the Mayor

Welcome to the Borough of Haddonfield's Website.

Tish ColombiOur Borough was founded almost three hundred years ago when John Haddon sent his 19 year old daughter to America to claim his land. Her name was Elizabeth Haddon and she adorns' the Borough seal.

Our early settlers built a wide main street--wide enough to accommodate the procession of the King of England, should he visit, with branches leading to other major settlements in the region. Our town is superbly located and beautifully sited. In this part of the country, money can no longer buy such a magnificent setting.

Our streets are lined with over 10,000 trees and the external appearance of the major structures in our town is an incredibly important component of our community's character. We were one of the first towns in New Jersey to pass an historic district ordinance, which has protected over 500 historic buildings and homes. Our most famous historic property is The Indian King Tavern, where George Washington once stayed, and the seal of New Jersey was adopted. Kings Highway, our main thorofare, is the setting of five churches, our municipal building and our Memorial High School. There are many tours available, including architectural and most recently the beautiful stained glass of our many churches. It is also home to our retail shopping area, alive with a diverse and colorful selection of merchants offering all kinds of specialty stores, restaurants to satisfy all types of palates, beautifully shaded sidewalks for strolling and benches for sitting. Also on Kings Highway is a station of the PATCO Speedline, a highspeed train which takes you to downtown Philadelphia in less than 15 minutes.

We strive to retain the original character of our town. Through an active partnership with the Borough Commissioners, the business community, the school district (one of the top three in the state), and more resident volunteers than can be counted, the Borough has retained an unique character reminiscent of days gone bye.

We offer a variety of family events throughout the year. Some of the most enjoyable are The Arts and Crafts Festival in July, Antique Auto and Antiques in September, Fall Festival in October and First Night, a non-alcoholic celebration of the, arts on New Year's Eve, This website is being provided in partnership with the Borough of Haddonfield's Professional and Business Association. I hope you find it informative and useful in planning your visits or just gaining knowledge of the Borough. Please feel free to contact any of the staff members listed throughout the pages of this site with any questions you may have. I encourage you to visit our website often to find out about the latest happenings in our town.

Again, on behalf of the Commissioners and myself, I welcome you to Haddonfield. I know you will- enjoy our town, rich in history, culture and a variety of activities for all interests and ages.
